No one thinks big of you

Reaction on a thread at the Telegraph.

Blog reactions: Mark at Stoush worries about the psychological impact.

I think reinforcing the social pressure on men to have penises of a good size is a bad thing, and indeed may contribute to aggressive acting out by young men who indeed do really have small, tremulous members.

I also crossposted this at LP where there is a boisterous discussion taking place.

Brilliant.

This must be a first for the RTA. They’ve actually done something clever that gets a message across.

Dunno if casting aspersions about a blokes night tools is seriously the way to go, but compassion fatigue has set in regards to other safety campaigns, namely those done by the TAC.

Lets see if it has a noticeable effect.

I’ve followed some of the ding dong in other forums you’ve been discussing this on. I reckon ten years in the army gives me a reasonable real world insight in to `homosocial’ relations. Incidentally I don’t think homosical is a real word.

IMO the risk taking behaviour exhibited by hoon drivers etc etc has very little to do with trying to impress the girls. It has a lot more to do with having fun and, as a close second, impressing your mates.

Driving cars in reckless manner is fun. It’s exciting, it’s thrilling. I get a much better buzz out of mountain biking but when I was young and had 150hp under my foot and an autobahn to use it on, you bet it was fun.

Girls? Ewww, germs! Well not quite but IMO it’s way down the list of why men, and increasingly women, hoon. Self gratification is the primary motivator.

[…] Several weeks ago I wrote about this PSA being run by the RTA, well today it appears that the the fellas weren’t too happy with the ad and have now filed a complaint to the Advertising Standards Bureau. AN RTA road safety campaign that suggests car hoons have small penises has unleashed a flood of complaints to the advertising standards bureau - from blokes. The $1.9 million campaign, which targets speeding among 17- to 25-year-olds, depicts female onlookers wiggling their pinkies as young male drivers speed by. The gesture, designed to symbolise a male with a small penis, is part of a strategy adopted by the RTA to make speeding “uncool’’. But the advertisement, aired for the first time last month, has raised the ire of some male viewers, who feel it is demeaning. […]
