Cyclingnews.com sold

BikeBiz UK is reporting the sale of Australian based Cyclingnews.com to UK publisher Future.
Future Publishing of Bath has acquired the Australia-based international website Cyclingnews.com from Knapp Communications Pty Ltd. Future recently bought the GPS-enabled Bikely.com to roll into its Bikeradar.com website.
There is discussion on the sale and purchase in the latest Spokesmen podcast.
The base will remain in Australia with Cyclingnews receiving a much needed makeover. To say the site was a dogs breakfast is an understatement. This looks very promising for global cycling coverage.
Gerard Knapp speaks for himself.

What others have to say…
There is a lot of stuff going on here Simon, however it always takes an offshore effort to grow it.
The usual story.
In many ways cycling is the ugly stepsister of sport and activity in Oz despite it’s obvious successes in so many areas.
I keep hoping the big players here will notice…
I kinda like Cycling News’ layout at the moment - given that it tries pretty hard to present news about many levels of cycling, not just the elite stuff, I think it does a very good job of presenting race results.
Yes, it’s got a lot of clutter, but that’s because there’s a lot of news to cover. The fact that carnegie’s crit results are easy to find is a plus. It makes those of us who race at the grass roots feel part of something big.
They’ve also been great with publishing photos. I have a few on there from some races, and they’re great to work with in that regard. I hope this bunch of poms who’ve bought it don’t bugger it up!

I’m sorry Gerard has sold. I know it was costing him money in the early years after he bought it from Bill. But he loved cycling and I hope the the new owners do as well. Told me once how many hits they got a day and it was staggering. Biggest users were from the USA back then.
I know waht you mean Carl, but I think the fact that they will maintain their Aussie base means you can expect all the Aussie goodness to continue, with contributions from guys like you who work hard at the grassroots, in fact given the nature of online media today they’d be nuts to throw that great stuff away.
But I do have to disagree with you (you know I would) on one point. The design really sucks and no rss feeds means that it loses a lot of guys like me who read just about all their stuff using that great application.
It sounds like Future is on the ball so it’s in safe hands.
I agree that it’s messy, and RSS feeds would be a plus, yes. It’s a bit like an old LBS with bits everywhere, you walk in, get assaulted by the smell of tyres and bikes everywhere, but it’s got everything you could want and everyone gets respected, from kids on 12″ bikes to high end roadies. I like that sort of thing. It’s got a feeling of community about it. It’s like a messy LBS with a welcoming feel to it, not some sterile shop with a couple of Colnagos behind glass walls that no-one can touch and sales staff that treat you with contempt unless you rode in on a bike costing at least $5k or drove the beemer there and parked it out the front where they could see it. I like it!

Wow … all of a sudden Australia is the centre of the cycling media world, given that Bikely.com was also local!
