Bike storage
Posted August 1st, 2007 in Review
Unclutterer has a nice roundup of in house bike storage options, including simple old favourites like the trusty ceiling hook, and more complicated systems like the bike lift; which uses a series of pulleys to get your machine out of the way. To this list I’d like to add my choice, the Delta Michelangelo (pictured) bike storage rack, or gravity rack.
I live in an apartment so compact storage is a must, and the Delta Michelangelo gravity rack nicely sits the bikes up and out of the way flat up against a wall without drilling or hammering hooks or mounts into the wall - this makes the Michelangelo an ideal solution not only for home owners but also renters.

What others have to say…
I need something like that - 5.5 bikes in the lounge room of a typical St Kilda 2 bedroom apartment is really testing my marriage.
I think I remember those racks Carl and agree that the Michelangelo isn’t as sturdy but with bikes being so light nowadays it may be less of an issue. Mine is handling the 7.5kg S-Works and 10.5kg steel single very nicely. I think they can handle 35kg just fine. The Broder style is a favourite of mine too.
……and Steve’s wife clearly has her priorities the wrong way around….it’s bikes first, living room aesthetics last.
Phil,
Cannot agree more . Got rid of my ex as she was taking up too much room in the bed and her gold bling was scratching my R3. Mmmmmmmm R3. Also live in St Kilda so if I need any no pants dance action all I have to do is go into my car park
We’re got a few additions around the house courtesy of Gripsport (and nor just their excellent frame repairs either)Don’t believe John manufactures the ‘leaning’ style bike rack anymore, although if you approached him with a design spec he’d probably be interested.
Anyway, the aesthetics in our household revolve around the N + 1 bicycle acquisition principle, homebrew and not annoying the dog/cats too much.
‘Tis refreshing to have a bloke who understands these domestic necessities.

Hehe, how far do you get with that line at your place Phil ?
Practical idea… BUT bikes as a focal point, in a lounge room? Sorry, it doesn’t work for me
Bikes belong on the balcony!

There used to be an Australian company that made gravity racks, and I have one of their racks, fantastic - very sturdy - no dramas with heavy-as-lead MTB’s, and great with CF bling roadies too. AFAIK they went broke or something a few years ago. They used to advertise in BA a bit. The ones you can get these days aren’t as well made, from what I’ve seen.
Another good option is the Ikea ‘Broder’ rack, have a look here :

I have (with my housemate) a pair of these linked together to house 4 bikes per side (8 bikes!) plus the 2 on the gravity rack. Just need somewhere to keep the tandem … The front room at aboc HQ is the bike room …
