Nice start! A little light from over your left shoulder could be useful :-)

Not to shabby. Maybe keep the head movements in check I was starting to get dizzy.

Great way to do editorial or reviews though.

You must be taking this seriously. It’s first time I’ve ever seen your shaven chin!!

video is tricky ..
When you adopt any new technology, it’s wise to ask will the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. To do this, you have know what both are.

Drawbacks of multimedia/video blogs include :

* bandwidth intensive - there are some people out there still using modems
* not suitable for people who read at work ‘on the sly’ unless they have headphones
* requires rehearsal or an extraordinary ability to follow a script or ad-lib if you want high quality
* difficult to accurately quote (maybe that’s a benefit? :) ) - I can’t cut & paste your blog once it’s video, not easily anyway, which can make it harder to cite you. Maybe that matters, maybe it doesn’t?
* increased cost of production
* less accessible to disabled audiences - deaf people can read, blind people can use text to speech engines etc
* dependency on a 3rd party as you’re doing it at the moment (youtube/google in this instance). Who owns the IP? Does it matter? Probably not … but maybe one day it might matter to you.

So what are the advantages?

Not as boring for you to author (until the novelty wears off)
We get to see your dial
You get to practice holding your head still while talking and we get to watch you improve at video presentation
You can point at things out of screen

Anything else? I’m curious - not knocking the idea, am just curious to know what advantages you think it will bring to your ability to communicate with your audience?

Gee, I love to continue with this meta conversation in another venue but the short answer is this……I’m moving away from blogging as it’s currently defined Carl….in fact this blog probably won’t exist for much longer.

I’m interested in other platforms of communication, one of which is video.

I have a You Tube account, I also use Twitter as a micro blogging platform, and I intend to integrate the two, anyone who wants to follow me can do so through the Spinopsys RSS feed at Twitter.

Spinopsys’ second birthday will be it’s last.

That’s a shame, it’s been a good read and quite an entertaining and thought-provoking time. Good luck with the pootube stuff.

Philip Says:

September 11th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

Remember Carl, it’s not about the platform it’s about the content.

I refuse to be weeded to any one method and would like to stay ahead of the curve. Hopefully folks will follow.

I’ll try to translate what I do in my way to a different platform.

Viewers/readers will judge if it’s worth following or not, the web is a big place with many different audiences.

Talking head vodcast offers nothing of benefit over an audio file. Sorry Phil, this one gets the thumbs down from me.

Fritz Says:

I’ll be sorry to see Spinopsys go away.

Simon Sharwood Says:

It will indeed be sad to see Spinopsys go.
Why not make it a multi-author blog and see what happens?

Thoglette Says:

Bandwidth is a bit of an issue (dialup is not dead), also hard to quote.

And I’m going to have to trade my text-to-voice software in for some strip-the-audio-from-you-tube software.

But you might finally get this neoluddite to look at Twitter.

My wish list (as someone who partakes in media monitoring) is that more bicycle-themed websites/blogs with news content would cotton on to RSS.

CN? Nope. Bike Radar? Nope. Numerous industry sites too many to mention? Nope…

I am going to miss Spinopsys in its current form, but I can understand your need to try something else. If you don’t still enjoy the blog, it is certainly not worth doing.

Still, that 2nd birthday is still a couple months away, right? The blog is not gone yet is it?

Well come on, by my count you are down about 12 videos :)
