Bicycle powered rangers

Sydney City Councillor Shayne Mallard has proposed that the city implement a comprehensive system of bicycle rangers to patrol the CBD and inner city.
Noting that the NSW Police have regularly patrolled the streets on bicycles since the 2000 Olympics, Councillor Mallard asked the Lord Mayor at tonight’s meeting to introduce bicycle transport for the City’s Rangers.
I’ll give this a qualified thumbs up, because as he notes the sight of the rangers on bicycles can be a civilising presence, and more public education can only be a good thing, however there has to be some caution regarding the authority of the rangers toward cyclists and other road users.
Bicycle based Rangers would also help to activate our emerging bicycle networks and lanes, assisting with education and enforcing responsible behaviour from cyclists and other road users.
The last thing I want to see is some puffed up ranger taking the law into their own hands over a minor issue, you know the saying, “give a man a badge and he thinks he’s the law”.
