Cyclists spinning

Post:

Sydney, yada, transport yada, yada

The NSW State Govt. has released an urban transport statement for Sydney.

Statement

Given the looming March election one can’t help but think this is nothing but pre-poll atmospherics, and the cynical will be unsurprised when many of these initiatives quickly disappear down the memory hole of bureaucracy once the political victors have raised the heads of the defeated on their spikes and the bodies buried.

There is only one thirteen line passage on cycling and that relates to the rolling out of more bicycle paths, crazy when you consider that we already have all the infrastructure needed - the current road network. Still it’s worth a read through for cyclists because we will be affected by the plans - more buses on the roads for example.

Snark:

The focus on eliminating pinch points on some roadways will make it much easier for motorists to accelerate to their eventual congestion destination, so we’ll still enjoy a whole lot of smug satisfaction as we ride past, through, over and around.

The increase in bus transport will allegedly allow everyone to sleep in an extra 13 minutes, but they’ll still be late to work because more buses combined with the refusal of motorists to get out of their cars will mean even more congestion.

Counterspin:

In the end the Govt is just talking the talk by announcing the spending of big money on mass public transport - given their history on transport and roads issues you can’t help but feel they don’t really know how to deal with the problem and none of this will matter much until the Govt. decides to take a serious look at road pricing in order to get personal motorists off the road, only then will the investment in public transport be realised as genuinely useful.
