Eurobike takes a strategic detour

As expected by many in the cycling industry, Eurobike Portland, will not occur in the short term and has morphed into Eurobike Sea Otter.

Eurobike has canceled its proposed September trade show in Portland and is developing a new show format with Sea Otter organizer, Frank Yohannan.

Klaus Wellmann, Messe Friedrichshafen’s chief executive officer, said the German trade show company is only “postponing” its foray into the U.S. market. Instead, working with Sea Otter staff, Wellmann wants to create an event that includes consumers as well as dealers, manufacturers and the media.

This sounds like a nice strategic move for Eurobike and one that makes loads of sense in that it is different to the usual show style and gets to the heart of cycling. I also like the Eurobike approach in partnerning with pre-existing events.

At the risk of repeating myself, I’d love to see them take a look at extending their reach to Australia.

Eurobike.

More link love? The check’s in the mail!

This is significant news, to me. What the heck it is going to mean to Sea Otter still isn’t clear either. No real details exist still. Many folks here are wondering what the full story is or will be.

It’s all very curious and it’s not at all like I want to see them fail because I think they could bring some good things to the industry here, but I really don’t understand them so far.

Their approach is kinda weird, but one thing is certain, they are very interested in the American market and despite the early hiccups looks like they will be there to stay. Sea Otter is the foot in the door and it buys time to assess the industry and establish some cred.

After the initial Portland weirdness they do have a lot of PR ground to make up.
